This role is with an up-and-coming biotech startup who are on a mission to accelerate the development of more productive and sustainable foods and crops. They're currently building the world's first ML-driven target discovery platform, specifically targeting the under-served space of crop gene-editing.

Their approach draws inspiration from recent advancements in the drug discovery space, incorporating cutting-edge technology to build a best-in-class discovery platform for plant sciences.

Operations Manager overview:

They are seeking an experienced Operations Lead to streamline financial, legal, and administrative workflows and support strategic business planning.

In this role, you will oversee daily operations of the company, ensuring optimal efficiency to support growth objectives. You'll work closely with the CEO to maintain and evolve cross-functional operational strategies, in particular, as they prepare for expansion of customer collaborations and upcoming funding rounds.

Operations Manager Responsibilities:

Core

  • Operational & Finance: Managing financial tasks such as invoicing, payroll, expense claims & employee benefit schemes in coordination with their outsourced accounting team; ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
  • Legal & Compliance: Overseeing legal correspondence & contract management for employees, contractors, suppliers & HMRC; ensuring all business activities comply with regulatory requirements & necessary insurance policies are in place.
  • People & HR: Developing & implementing HR strategies that foster a productive workplace, including recruitment, training, performance appraisal, and retention programs; adapting HR practices to support business scaling.
  • Office Management: Ensuring all team members have the resources & environment needed to succeed, from physical workspace & facilities, to tools & technologies.

Additional / Development Areas

  • Financial Management: Working with the CEO to manage financial health, including cash flow & budgeting; preparing financial reports for investors.
  • Strategic Planning: Assisting in market research, business modelling & organisational planning; contributing to setting and tracking of strategic objectives.
  • Business Development Support: Engaging in lead generation & accounts planning to support business growth.

Operations Manager requirements -

Core

  • ≥5 years relevant industry experience
  • Proven experience in operations management with track record of enhancing operational efficiency in a growing startup
  • Strong understanding of financial processes, legal compliance & human resources management
  • Excellent organisational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication & interpersonal skills, capable of building strong working relationships & effectively conveying information at all levels
  • Leadership capabilities with ability to drive change & influence company culture

Nice-to-have

  • Familiarity with the agricultural technology or biotechnology sectors
  • Experience in an ML-first technology startup / scale-up
